Forced reconciliation is impossible; peace can only be made voluntarily. Such was Paul’s challenge to Philemon: to reconcile with the runaway slave Onesimus out of Gospel love, not resigned duty. Paul didn’t force Philemon to do the right thing. Instead, he persuaded him to demonstrate through reconciliation the transformative power of the Gospel and the God who reconciles us to Himself.
