Christmas carols combine both lament and hope in order to present the essential truth of Christmas itself. This life gives us much to mourn and long for as we cry out for love, freedom, forgiveness, meaning, and hope. Yet none of these things bring us satisfaction. Instead, they are meant to point us to a deeper need—one that nothing in this world can satisfy. As Alistair Begg reminds us, all of our hopes and fears are met only on Christ.
