Preparing for Communion, Alistair Begg focuses us on the cross. Jesus voluntarily laid down His life for us. He died not as a martyr or selfless exemplar but as our substitute, taking our penalty for sin. Only He could save us. The cross is not good advice about what we might do; it is the good news of what Christ has already done. It does not proclaim that we are worth saving but that God alone is mighty to save.
