Dale Ralph Davis explains that there is no trick for reading the Old Testament, save for depending on the Holy Spirit and sharpening one’s reading of narrative. As he notes, preachers should look for the text’s theology and keep their finger on the pulse of Old Testament narrative. Additionally, pastors should pay attention to each story’s shape and be careful in exegesis, even as they expect surprises. God, after all, delights to do the unexpected!
