It’s clear that God has called His church to benevolence—to care for the poor, the orphan, and the widow. There is great debate, though, over the strategies and techniques needed to meet that objective. Voddie Baucham insists that benevolence must be biblically based, which precludes either ignoring those in need or simply throwing money at them. Rather, true Christian benevolence must begin with the families of the needy before extending through the church into the community at large.
